The Coleman 228J195 1979 Double Mantle Lantern, also known as the 220J, is a vintage treasure that harks back to the golden era of camping. This lantern, with its timeless design, is a testament to Coleman's enduring commitment to quality and durability.
The 228J195 Double Mantle Lantern boasts a unique double mantle design, which allows for a brighter and more sustained burn compared to single mantle lanterns. Each mantle has its own fuel reservoir, ensuring an even distribution of fuel and thus, an even burn. The mantles are made of high-quality, heat-resistant material that can withstand long hours of use without melting or warping.
The lantern's body is crafted from sturdy aluminum, making it lightweight yet robust. It features a classic, domed shape that not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also helps to direct the light upwards, illuminating a larger area. The lantern's base is equipped with adjustable feet, allowing you to stabilize it on various surfaces, including uneven ground.
The 220J comes with a pressure regulator that ensures a steady flow of fuel to the mantles, preventing sudden flare-ups and promoting a consistent flame. The fuel tank is located at the bottom of the lantern, and it can be easily filled through a convenient fill hole. The fuel type for this lantern is Coleman's 1-Liter Propane (LPG) fuel canister, which is widely available and easy to find.
The lantern features a convenient side handle, making it easy to carry around the campsite. It also has a protective glass cover that shields the mantles from wind and debris, keeping the flame alive in adverse weather conditions. The glass cover is removable for easy cleaning and maintenance.
In terms of safety, the 220J lantern comes with an adjustable burn control knob, allowing you to regulate the flame intensity. This is particularly useful when you want to conserve fuel or when the wind conditions change. The lantern also has a fuel shut-off valve that can be used to prevent accidental fuel spills.
In conclusion, the Coleman 228J195 1979 Double Mantle Lantern is more than just a lighting solution; it's a piece of camping history. Its classic design, robust construction, and reliable performance make it a must-have for any dedicated camper. Whether you're camping under the stars or hosting a backyard BBQ, this lantern will add a touch of nostalgia and warmth to your outdoor experience.
